If there is one thing I have learnt over the past couple of years – it can be really easy to get trapped in your own world that we forget about the importance of kindness – the act of giving ourselves generously without expecting anything in return

Being kind to loved ones, work colleagues or even a stranger, is a great gesture and can make a massive difference.

By living a life with intent of being nice and selfless, you can have a positive effect on yourself – giving you meaning, and the good feeling that you are doing something worthy with your life.

The key to happiness – seek to carry out one or more random acts of kindness every day. Every small, positive action you take is an opportunity to make someone else’s life slightly better.

“You cannot do kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Perfect Manifesto: 55 Random Acts Of Kindness You Can Start Doing Today

The list below details various random acts of kindness that you can start doing today:

  • Send a message to let someone know you’re thinking of them.
  • Ask a friend how they have been feeling recently.

Joe Rogan

  • Say how much you’ve missed someone when you haven’t seen them for a while.
  • Share your feelings with someone you trust.
  • Thank someone and tell them how they’ve made a difference for you.
  • Offer to have the kids so your partner can go out with friends.
  • Remember next time you’re angry with someone on social media – they are a real person too.

“Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

“I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I’ll put it before any of the things like courage, or bravery, or generosity, or anything else… Kindness—that simple word. To be kind—it covers everything, to my mind. If you’re kind that’s it.”

Roald Dahl
  • Make a plan to connect with others.
  • Plan a date night with your significant other.

  • Give sincere compliments to people you talk to.
  • Remember everyone has their own problems – go easy on someone if they make a mistake or seem distracted.

“As for…the fear that compassion will involve you in suffering, counter it with the realization that the sharing of sorrow expands your capacity to share joy as well. When you callously ignore the suffering of others, you lose the capacity to share their happiness, too.”

Albert Schweitzer
  • Give someone positive feedback.
  • Offer some help to someone who has been struggling with a problem for a while – be a mentor
  • Tell a loved one what attributes you like about them.

Anything else to add?

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”

  1. Great list James – so much love and tolerance and understanding. Has to be shared! Something I like to do is wish strangers peace as I pass them by. Reminds me to pay attention to those around me and smile more.

    1. That’s a really kind thing to do, although not a stranger, it made me think of the time when I was leaving a job and a work colleague thanked me and said they’d be praying for me to be successful in my next role, it was something that caught me off guard, but I thought was so kind that someone was wishing for my success in their thoughts.

Thanks for your comment – I look forward to reading more of your work.

  2. Something my grandmother taught me was ‘Treat others like you would want to be treated. ‘ I’ve always believed in it, James, even when angry with someone. I was so glad to see it on your list.

Likewise, taking stuff to the charity shop gives me a huge lift, plus it makes me feel good seeing all the space I’ve freed up from decluttering. Again, great to see it on your list.

Something I always do when out walking the dogs in the morning is to say ‘Good morning’, to everyone we pass. Most return a ‘good morning,’ but some don’t. Still, I hope I’ve brightened up their day a little.

Thanks for this extensive list, James. With what’s going on in the world at the moment, these acts of kindness are something we all need a lot of.

    1. Thanks Hugh – I think ‘treat others like you want to be treated’ is one of the first values I learnt and something I’ve always tried to follow.

I used to work in a charity shop when long term unemployed so I always keep them in mind and encourage others to donate rather than throw quality stuff away.

Saying good morning is a good idea , but seems to have been going out of fashion for a bit. When walking the dog myself I’ve started doing it to make people feel more comfortable- I think the elderly particularly appreciate it!

Always worth remembering- if you have nothing to give, start with kindness.

  3. this is a pretty exhaustive list, and I would think everyone can find something on the list they can do in the name of kindness. well done, James! I think my favorite quote was the one from Roald Dahl…

  4. I LOVE this list! I hadn’t thought of some of the things being acts of kindness, but once I saw them on the list, it made sense to me! Thanks for sharing this, not only as a list of ideas for things that we can do, but if we’re already doing some of the things, it’s a nice shot in the arm to feel good!

    1. Thank you- yes the list was to act as a reminder of kind things we can do, other things to try and things we might not have even thought of that we should add and do more of!
