I have had many years going to the gym.  Many times I have tried various gimmicky exercises, which I usually picked up from some fitness magazine or website.  Sometimes it has been some gym bro extending his “knowledge”

As I have got older I realised that sometimes it is better to stick to the basics rather than trying to imitate some crazy routine seen on YouTube.

So here are (in my opinion) the best 10 free weight exercises to do in the gym

15 years of the gym

I realised the other day that I have been going to the gym for over 15 years.

It all started when my dad started encouraging me to join the gym he was going to.  I was a shy, quiet, overweight Eighteen year old.  I knew if I didn’t take action I was going to get fatter.

So I joined that day.  I never knew doing that would change my life forever.

If you don’t have time to watch, basically it is a guy making sarcastic and amusing comments of people working out – doing stupid routines, dropping weights, etc, etc.

Sweating over weight loss

When I woke up and realised that I had gained a lot of weight, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy – I didn’t have that same motivation or self-control and I certainly wasn’t as fit as I used to be.

I had gone up to 14 stone 6 lbs (91.4 kg).   This shocked me and I vowed to step-up my exercise and look after myself better.  So since the middle of February I have probably being a bit too obsessive about my weight loss. Continue reading “Sweating over weight loss”

Things I wish I knew when I first joined a gym

I have been going to the gym for a long time, along the way I have learnt a lot of things – some which took longer than others.

The Importance of Nutrition:

When I first joined the gym the aim was to lose weight while maintaining my unhealthy diet.  I did lose weight but I quickly plateaued.  From various ambitions such as getting rid of fat round my stomach or becoming stronger I never valued the importance of nutrition.

Back to the gym

Out with the old…

  1. I first noticed signs of a foot injury in August.
  2. I started my new job in January.

These were my two main reasons I decided to quit my old gym two months ago.

Before that my gym workouts had been quite sporadic.

Because of being lazy and the time off I have lost a lot of strength, cardio fitness and my body fat percentage has gone back up. Continue reading “Back to the gym”

Gym observations

I have been going to the gym for over 12 years now.  Naturally this gives me the god-given right to judge everyone in my path.  Here are things I have observed over the years.

Men in the free weights area with big upper bodies – they seem to wear track suit bottoms a lot, therefore I have to ask “Do you even squat bro?”

A 300 pound woman and a 250 pound woman go the gym – this is not the start of a bad sexist joke.  But with revolutionist rush at the gym in January I was amused by a 300 pound woman giving advice to here 250 pound friend. Continue reading “Gym observations”
